Information on Vitamin D: Liquid Sunshine Program
This month, we’re highlighting the importance of super nutrient vitamin D by launching the Liquid Sunshine program. Well-known for its role in keeping bones strong, vitamin D is now being hailed for so much more – from normal muscle function to a healthy immune system.
Yet despite the growing research on the power of vitamin D, seven out of 10 Americans still fall short of the recommended vitamin D in their diets each day, according to the recent Dietary Guidelines Committee Advisory report.

Information on the new USDA MyPlate icon and National Diabetes Month
USDA MyPlate Icon
The new USDA MyPlate icon was recently introduced to remind Americans how to eat healthfully and the dairy group is prominently positioned next to the plate as a reminder that lowfat and fat free milk are an important part of a nutritious meal.
National Diabetes Month
Some scientists hypothesize that America’s shortfall in vitamin D may be one of the reasons behind the current epidemic of type 2 diabetes. There’s even some research that suggests a combination of calcium and vitamin D could reduce the risk. Drinking more milk - a leading source of calcium and vitamin D in the American diet - could help decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes by nearly 15 percent, according to a recent meta-analysis and review published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. Milk is one of the few food sources of the much-needed super nutrient (it’s the leading source of vitamin D in our diets – supplying more than half of the nation’s vitamin D). The recommended three glasses of lowfat or fat free milk a day provide 75% of the Daily Value of vitamin D.

Tips to Pour One More Serving of Milk Each Day and Information on the Changes to Flavored Milk in Schools
Tips to Pour One More
Eight out of 10 Americans are not consuming the recommended amount of milk, and consequently, are missing out on the nutrients it provides. Milk is naturally nutrient-rich like no other beverage. Thanks to milk’s unique nutrient package, pouring even just one more serving each day would shrink the nutrient gap.
Changes to Flavored Milk in Schools
Many of the nation’s milk processors have been hard at work over the last five years to lower the calories and sugar in one of the most popular lunch time drinks, flavored milk. Lowfat chocolate milk is the most popular milk choice in schools and not only does it have the same nine essential nutrients as white milk, but with industry reformulations, this year it’s projected to have just 31 calories more than white milk and 38% less sugar than five years ago.
