We have introduced a new program at our Edgewood High School called "Milk it Up" during breakfast. Any student may upgrade their 8oz Carton milk for a 16oz Bottled Milk for just $.25. We also operate a Milk Vending Machine with 16oz Bottled Milk (Chocolate, White, Strawberry, and Vanilla) and several Nestle Flavors. This machine is accessible to students and staff twenty-four hours daily. The Vended Milk sells for $1.00 regular and $1.40 Nestle so the students really get a great deal if they come in for breakfast and upgrade their milk. It is a WIN/WIN for us and the students with our breakfast participation increasing and the students EATING BREAKFAST and saving money.
So many High School students skip breakfast and do not consume their three dairy products daily; with this program, we are really enhancing their learning abilities along with their nutritional needs.
We average seventy-five breakfasts daily, of these, twenty a day have upgraded Milk -- that's over 25%! This is incremental sales of $5.00 daily or about $900 annual, but more importantly, our students are drinking more MILK!!!!!!
We started the breakfast program and the "Milk it Up" for the 06-07 school year. We wrote to implement a breakfast program at all schools in the district in our Wellness Policy along with providing a milk vending machine in the secondary schools. The "Milk it Up" program brought the breakfast program to a new level with the older students; they love the Bottled Milk as opposed to the Carton.
