I have increased consumption of milk in several ways. In 2003, I implemented breakfast in the classroom at two elementary schools. The breakfast is supported by Provision 2 and is offered at no charge to students. We deliver cold milk and breakfast items directly to each classroom. The students eat breakfast and drink milk while the teacher is preparing them for the day. We offer lowfat chocolate and white milk. I recently implemented age-appropriate 10 oz bottles in three different flavors at my secondary schools. With assistance from the Western Dairy Council, I was able to aquire new milk coolers featuring great looking cow print graphics. The coolers market the milk in a fun and attractive manner. With such tremendous results at the secondary schools, I then introduced 8oz bottled milk in my remaining 7 schools this school year. Students at all levels are drinking it up. We also offer cold milk in the classroom for pizza parties. And, we implemented our daily hot lunch program at the two alternative schools in our city. These programs reach an additional 275 students each day. We've noticed that a majority of the students who drink the offered milk purchase a second bottle.
Before the breakfast in the classroom programs, less than 100 students participated in the traditional breakfast programs. Currently at these two schools, we serve over 625 breakfasts daily and most students choose milk. a 500+% increase. The introduction of 10 ounce bottles at the secondary schools increased milk consumption by 47%. It is to early to analyze results of the implementation of the 8 oz bottles. However, my staff is ordering more milk and more students are choosing milk with meals. With the implementation of all these programs, over 1200 more bottles of milk are being consumed daily by our students.
I implemented the breakfast in the classroom programs in the fall of 2003. We began serving 10 oz bottles at the secondary schools in the fall of 2004. We have been serving some meals to our alternative schools for a few years, however, it was just this year that we started offering every child in these schools hot lunch everyday. This fall we implemented 8 ounce bottle milk at the remaining 7 schools. In the last 2 years we have also encouraged teachers to lets us offer milk during their classroom pizza parties.
