When Shelly Anderson started working at Summit School in 2003 only about 15% of the school's 135 students participated in the breakfast program. That wasn't enough for Shelly. She made increasing breakfast participation a priority, by offering more milk choices, better prices and starting a weekly contest. 1% and 2% white milk, and skim chocolate milk were offered. Also, Shelly helped to lower the price of milk to the lowest possible price. Finally, each time a student ate a school breakfast, they added their name into a fish bow, and each week one name would be drawn and that student would win a book.
Shelly and her staff continued with the program and contest, and by the program's third year they were seeing 60% growth in average daily breakfast participation. Cases of milk per week have increased from 1 case of 1% white milk to 5 cases of 1% per week.
Now, in the program's fifth year, Shelly is adding strawberry milk to the student's options, as well as expanding the prizes students are eligible to win.
Shelly Anderson and her staff started making changes in February of 2002 and are always working on developing new programs and new ideas to get more students consuming more milk.
