Cecelia Moody, Food Service Director with Madison Park Middle School, understands the importance of educating students about milk and reminding them of milk’s benefits every chance she gets. Celebrity posters and banners promoting milk are hung not only in the cafeteria, but can also be found in the gymnasium and the nurse's office. Then Cecilia takes it to another level. In order to promote nutrition, Cecelia and her staff also have students participate in a nutrition class and health fair.
Cecilia began The Think Your Drink class for the ’06-’07 school year. It’s held on a monthly basis for students, and is used to teach children about the differences between juice and milk. And the lessons are paying off. Many students have made the switch to milk, and are now purchasing milk with their school meals.
The first Health Fair was in March 2008 and it offers flavored milk samples as well as nutrition handouts, to reinforce that milk not only tastes good but also is good for their growing bodies. The fair was so successful that it will be an annual March event.
Finally, the staff at Madison Park takes advantage of every opportunity to promote milk, for example, offering it over juice during classroom parties and mentioning milk in the school's newsletter.
Through the efforts of Cecelia and her staff, milk consumption has increased about 13% since the programs were started.
