Getting high school students to choose milk over sodas and other unhealthy beverages was a challenge that kitchen manager Joyce Bridgmon knew she could take on. With a soda machine situated right next to the school’s milk vending machine, Joyce knew pumping up milk sales would take some creativity.
After some strategic thinking, Joyce has had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches placed right next to the milk, in the vending machine—and her creativity worked! Knowing that a PB&J sandwich goes best with ice cold milk, Joyce quickly began to see an increase in the school’s milk sales—a 56% increase!
Her story was so successful that when she submitted it to the School Nutrition Association Louise Sublette Award of Leadership Excellence and won! With the recognition of her success in generating more milk sales, Joyce pledges to continue reaching high in milk sales goals in the coming years.
