Terri Kalina, food service director with the Independent School District of Flatonia, TX, implemented a number of promotions to encourage her students to drink more milk. First, she put to use grant money that the school received to purchase two upright milk boxes with cow prints. The packaging caught the student's attention and got them more interested in milk. Then, Terri got students to try new milk flavors by featuring a 'flavor of the month'. She held a voting day where students selected their favorite flavor: chocolate won.
And Terri didn't stop there. Coaches and teachers became involved by posing for milk mustache photos, as did athletes such as cheerleaders, football players and cross-country members. Terri enlarged these milk mustache "celebrity" role model ads, framed them and hung them in the cafeteria to encourage younger students to drink milk so they can grow up to be like the athletes they admire in their school. Terri even got the Homecoming King and Queen to pose with milk mustaches.
All of these promotions have since increased milk consumption by 220%! Terri plans on continuing these promotions and to keep thinking of new and exciting ways to keep up student interest and consumption of milk in her school.
